Ai Weiwei
Ai Weiwei is an activist, architect, curator, and filmmaker, and is internationally recognised as one of China’s most renowned artists. Born in Beijing in 1957, Ai’s impressive body of work provides commentary on social, cultural and political issues, cementing him as a fierce defender of free speech and human rights.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Ai creates works based on the direction and outcome of his research, whether it be a major installation inspired by immigration or a documentary on the 2019 Hong Kong protests. Now based in Berlin, Ai has held major solo exhibitions across the world and continues to speak out publicly on issues important to him.
In 2017 Ai Weiwei and Public Art Fund engaged UAP to help realise Arch and Gilded Cage for the New York City-wide exhibition ‘Ai Weiwei: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors’.
Ai Weiwei is represented by Lisson Gallery, Galleria Continua, Galerie Max Hetzler and Mary Boone Gallery.
