Zhang Huan
#Three Legged Buddha
NEW WINDSOR, USA
Considered one of the most vital, influential, and provocative contemporary artists working today, Zhang Huan’s practice extends across performance art, painting and sculpture.
Huan’s 2007 work Three Legged Buddha engages with Buddhist philosophy, rituals and the artist’s notion that the contemporary condition is continually revitalised through and engagement with the past. The incredible sculpture is over 28 feet high, 48 feet in diameter, and weighs over 25,000 pounds.
The work was originally fabricated in the artist’s China studio by over 100 craftspeople, using welded and hammered copper and steel. Before its permanent installation at Storm King Art Center, Three Legged Buddha arrived at UAP Rock Tavern (previously known as Polich Tallix) for restoration, to ensure longevity for the years to come.
