#This Noble Tree
TOOWOOMBA, AUSTRALIA
Australian artist Belinda Smith collaborated with UAP, to create a suspended artwork inside Toowoomba City Library.
The 60m long artwork represents the trunk of a Hoop Pine tree laid horizontally through the library as a symbol of Toowoomba’s history of the land and its people. The artwork consists of a series of 203 curved plywood sections that mark out the circumference of the symbolic tree. The fluid, elevated work reveals graphic text details applied to the inner surface, and shows fragments of Alan Cunningham’s writings about the Toowoomba district and its native flora.
Within the rectilinear structure of the library environment this curved form extending through the collection halls hangs in contrast. Its length, volume and structure creates a sense of wonder and enquiry.
