Tomokazu Matsuyama

Tomokazu Matsuyama’s 2022 solo exhibition “The Best Part About Us” at Kavi Gupta gallery in Chicago featured both Dancer and Runner.

Dancer is a poetic exploration of dancing. Whilst a human body is featured within the artworks form, it is inspired by the idea of movement and action, rather than a literal depiction of a dance.

Runner is a highly abstract sculpture, that presents a poetic incarnation of certain ideas about the function and cultural meaning of running as part of human culture.

Both works were made within UAP’s Shanghai workshop using mirror polished stainless steel. The realisation of Dancer and Runner was funded by Art Makers and created in collaboration with Matsuyama and Kavi Gupta.
